Dr. Frezzo Talks About Pet Stress
Stressed Pet

One of my clients recently told me, "I sought a remote position so I could be home with my dog more.  Now, his anxious behavior is worse."   Many of us will do anything to accommodate our pets and show them we love them.  The pandemic of the last three years led to a number of newly acquired cats and dogs.  Adoption rates soared, yet, the pets didn't always get the best opportunities to socialize and to become confident.   Life was clearly different.

It was great for many pets to have the family members home with them.  Then, when the children returned to school, and adults started to go back to work, the pets felt a significant change.   Anxious feelings can make some pets sad and mopey.  Others become destructive and vocal.  Some develop physical ailments which upset their digestive systems or develop skin conditions.

So, what do we do to help our pets adjust?   I find doTERRA Adaptiv and Copaiba to be very supportive.  These essential oils are safe and effective for our pets of all ages and sizes.  Apply the Touch roll ons topically 2-4 times daily by rolling the bottle in the palm of your hand and petting your pet on the head, back, belly or rump.  Keep the experience positive.  It doesn't need to be a long period of contact.  For example, a cat may allow one quick swipe along its back.  You can also diffuse Adaptiv and Copaiba for 20-30 minutes or all day.  doTERRA's long acting water diffusers are perfect.

The Adaptiv blend contains Magnolia which contains more linalool than lavender, making it very calming.  Neroli and Rosemary are also high in linalool content.  Copaiba, with potent concentrations of B-caryophylline  (BCP), soothes the nervous system, and enhances brain function and memory.  BCP has been shown in studies to improve behavioral and biochemical responses to chronic stress.

When you apply and diffuse oils for your pets, you benefit as well.  Pets are sensitive to our emotions.  They are keenly aware of our nervousness, fear or worry.  Try to put these emotions aside, and show confidence for your pets.  Leave the house without a long, dramatic departure, and return without a grandiose celebration.   Your nonchalant attitude is actually helpful for them.  You may also choose to leave the radio or television on for comfort as well.

Copaiba and Adaptiv are excellent choices to support your pet's adjustment and acceptance of new or challenging situations.  Some pets may respond within a few days.  For the best outcome, commit to using these essential oils for several weeks.  Our pets thank us for easing their emotions.
